Montezuma Quail
With the shadows of leaves on a tree above dappling its back, this male Montezuma Quail gingerly made its way into the open, accompanied by a chick, in Ash Canyon AZ. It began to feed but was startled by noises made by nearby birders, and quickly retreated into the underbrush. I never saw it again.
