Willet flying into dawn light
This willet is just arriving at dawn at a pond that has formed landward of the sandy beach. Refilled with sea water each high tide, the pond harbors countless lugworms, favorite prey of the larger shorebirds like godwits and willets that feed here. The lugworm live in burrows and can be several feet long.
