Territorial fight by Semipalmated Plovers
These two birds are fighting over feeding territories occupied during spring migration on the coast of South Carolina. The one on the right is calling loudly as you can see the the puffed out throat and open bill. These territories can last for several days. At the same time, most of the Semipalmated Plovers in the area will be feeding in loose flocks, without defending territories.
