Least Sandpiper on Limantour Spit during high tide
This bird was running along the edge of a small pond in the upper beach being fed by waves washing over a berm.
At high tide Least Sandpipers are forced out of the nearby estero and they fly to the beach to roost in flocks of variable size, from a few to several hundred. The flocks are usually well above the high tide line.
