Marbled Godwit scratching
Scolopacids (members of the bird family Scolopacidae, e.g., godwits, sandpipers, snipes, etc.) scratch "directly." That is, the foot and leg extend directly to the face or throat. Charadrids (members of the bird family Charadridae, e.g, plovers) scratch "indirectly." They put their wing slightly out and the foot goes back and over the wing, and then comes to the face or throat. There's some shorebird trivia for you!
