A flock of Sanderling flies east over the wave-washed zone of Limantour Spit
It's dawn on Limantour Spit, Point Reyes CA. The haze hovering above the waves is wind borne spray from the crashing surf. A sanderling flock has just been rousted by a Peregrine Falcon, but the panic is over and they are about to settle back down on the beach.
This collection of photographs, almost all taken by me, Pete Myers, in early December 2021, illustrates a few of the core themes of a bird's life on the sandy beaches of Northern California.
There is method to their apparent madness.
