High tide flock on Limantour Spit. Dunlin and Sanderling
During high tides virtually all shorebirds are forced off the mudflats in Limantour Estero. This leads to large mixed flocks on the beach. Sanderlings continue to feed (two in this photograph are carrying Sand Crabs Emerita analoga. Dunlins rarely feed during high tides on the beach, although as the tide starts to recede they will probe for invertebrates at the edges of high tide pools.
